News from Mrs. Harder’s Second Grade Class

Classroom Updates:
Reading:
We are continuing to read in our new unit entitled, Look Again. It is mostly on how animals use camouflage. Our story for the week is How the Guinea Fowl Got Her Spots. We will identify the ow, ou—spellings for /ow/; and identify the ck spellings for /k/.We continue to work on writing complete, expanded sentences with vocabulary words from the story. Our five vocabulary words are:
glossy delicious slinking
scrambled cautiously
Please study them with your child. Please encourage your child to continue to read their library books. After taking AR tests on their library books they can return them any day, but Monday. They don’t have to wait for their scheduled library day which is Thursday.
Spelling:
Our test will be on Friday this week. Students should study their spelling words during the week. This week’s words highlight the /oo/ sound. Plus this week I have included other words from our story. Our fifteen spelling words are:
boot, food, moon, room, tune, rude, knew, too, do, who, fowl, growling, trout, shouted, mouthful
Please review these words with your child to ensure their success on their test.
Math:
We are working on taking surveys and composing the data.

Teacher’s Corner:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The IRI testing was a great success in 2nd grade. We had 19 threes out of 29 students in my class. Also, my twos and ones all doubled their score from the fall IRI testing. I am so proud of all their hard work. Please make sure they continue to read nightly.
I must apologize to you all that I didn’t get my newsletter out last week. It was time consuming with report cards and testing. I am now back on track. Thank you for being patient. Feel free to contact me with regard to any questions or concerns you may have.
