Hi Trailblazers! My name is Rachel Christiansen and this is my first year as the librarian at Oregon Trail. I’ve loved reading my whole life and I’m so excited to be here and be able to pass that love of reading onto all the wonderful students! I am a mom to four great kids, three boys that are students here and one two year old little girl. I love to spend my spare time with my husband and kids going on walks, watching movies and playing board games and card games!
I have been teaching for 17 years. The last 4 of which have been in Twin Falls. I have 3 Kids. Two boys in high school and one girl in middle school. I love to spend the summer and early fall working in my yard, garden, and taking walks with my husband and two little dogs. On cold or rainy weekends I enjoy cuddling in a soft, fuzzy blanket, watching Netflix, and drinking coffee. One of my goals as a teacher is to make sure each of my students know they are loved, they matter, and they can meet their goals if they put their mind to it and never stop trying.
My name is Mrs. Coombs and this will be my 19th year of teaching. I went to Utah State University where I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education with a minor in Language Arts. I spent most of my career between Kindergarten and 3rd grade. When we moved to Twin Falls I taught three years in the Title 1 program, and now am very excited to be here teaching first grade! When I’m not teaching, I am mom to my beautiful 13 year old daughter Abby, 2 dachshund dogs, 2 cats, and a fish tank full of fish! Our family likes to travel when we can, and we have been very lucky to have been to exciting places like; Hawaii, Disneyworld, Bahamas and Mexico. I also love taking pictures and reading.
I am looking forward to a great school year!
My name is Miss Aimee Dawson and I love being a teacher! I grew up in northwest Oregon and Boise, Idaho. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Idaho State University in the winter of 2013. Before teaching my own class, I worked as a substitute teacher for a year and half in Pocatello. Apart from being a teacher, I am also enjoying being a new mommy to a beautiful and hilarious baby boy named Anthony (he makes the funniest faces you’ve ever seen). In my spare time, I enjoy researching ‘useless information’, going to Salt Lake Comic Con, and cooking.
I graduated from the University of Wyoming at Casper College with a B.A. in Elementary Education. I also have additional certifications in Wyoming for Early Childhood Education and a certificate of completion for ELL from the Yellowstone Language Institute. My hobby is fixing and playing guitars. I have been in several bands and enjoy watching people dance and have fun. I love to travel. I love the ocean and often go to the west coast to see the sights.
I believe every child is a special needs child. They all have needs specific to them. It makes me very happy to interact with my students daily. I am very pleased to be here at Oregon Trail and look forward to many years of fun with the students!

I am a mother of two wonderful girls to whom I have always stressed the importance of getting the best education possible. I have a passion for Early Childhood Education. I worked as a Para Educator for 5 years while going to school and obtaining a Bachelors in Education. I taught preschool for seven years and have taught Kindergarten for the past five years here at Oregon Trail. I strongly believe that making a positive impact in a child’s education in their early years, will foster a love for learning that will allow them to be successful in the rest of their schooling. I am proud knowing that the little minds that I am helping to educate today, will be the great minds of our future professionals.
Mr Matlock grew up loving school. In fact, he loved it so much that he decided to keep coming to school for a career! One of Mr Matlock’s primary goals is to create a positive school experience so that everyone is able to look back at their elementary school years and say they were fantastic years!
Hi, My name is Penny Newbry and I am the Computer Lab Assistant here at Oregon Trail Elementary. I have been teaching students in a computer lab setting for 16+ years. The most important thing a student can learn in the computer lab is basic typing skills. Without the basics, students are going to have difficulties with regular programs. So, whenever your student says they are bored with nothing to do, let them go to typing.com and practice. This is the program I use in my classes and they can use the same logons at home.
Hey Trailblazers! I’m Mrs Ruiz and this is my 11th year teaching 1st grade at Oregon Trail. I received my Bachelors degree in Child Development and Elementary Education from Cal State Bakersfield. When I’m not at school my passion is spending time with my husband and two kiddos. We love to travel, fish, snowboard, and just hang out watching movies. I knew from a young age that my heart belonged to education. I love every moment of my job, but especially watching my students become readers. Best job in the world!!! Have a fabulous year Oregon Trail.

Hello parents and students. My name is Ms. Stansell, and this is my 10th year of teaching second grade at Oregon Trail Elementary. My name is Whitney Ward and I am thrilled to be Oregon Trail’s Instructional Coach. My sixteen years in education has been eclectic and exciting, including roles as a classroom teacher, principal, and professor at Northwest Nazarene University. I believe passionately that the best way to empower students is to have an effective teacher in each classroom. Which is why I love my current role. My focus is supporting teachers. Just like a football coach works on all aspects of the game, an instructional coach helps teachers to focus on their own ‘game,’ with the intention of constantly improving our work. I work with teachers at Oregon Trail and Rock Creek. Outside of school I enjoy the outdoors. Running, water skiing, and snow skiing are my all-time favorite activities to share with my husband and our two kids.
My name is Mrs. Youngman and this will be my 8th year of teaching! I have taught both elementary and middle school. I went to Boise State University where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education in 2008. My minors were Social Studies, Geography and Earth Science. I am also very passionate about technology. When I’m not teaching, I’m working on websites, playing games, watching movies and travelling with my husband
